It all started while enjoying a 'quiet tipple'

Never ones to shirk an opportunity, John and Jan purchased the 110-acre property at an auction at the Vasse Hotel on 14 December 1985. The property was bushland, plus one large paddock and a shack with no electricity. But John and Jan recognised in it something they could grow, nurture and encourage into life. It had potential.

Perhaps the most important influence on John, Jan and the Frazer Woods story was that of renowned winemaker Harold Osborne - who traversed from California to Western Australia to New Zealand and back again in order to perfect the art of new world sparkling. Famously renowned for leaving California in order to get a tan, after months dedicated to the region’s underground cellars, Harold passed his legacy on to John, Jan, and all enthusiasts of exceptional sparkling wine thorough the development of La Cache.

Ever the opportunists, the pioneers and the experimentalists, John and Jan continue to oversee the operations of Frazer Woods alongside the next generation of custodians, their sons Tom, James and Nick.

Willyabrup, Margaret River

The vineyard is situated in the highly sort after Willyabrup sub region of Margaret River – a world-renowned wine region celebrated for producing high quality wines.

It is with this spirit of determination, enjoyment, experimentation and excellence that, more than a quarter of a century later, they continue to produce Margaret River’s finest sparkling wines, crafted from local Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Cabernet and Shiraz.

John Frazer crafts his wines using the méthode traditionnelle – adding a small amount of liquor de tirage before sealing the wines into bottles with a crown cap and transferring them to the cellar where they are stacked for maturation.

Deep inside the cellar, the wine goes through secondary fermentation in bottle and embarks on a long period of ageing sur lie – an all-important process that is a hallmark of John’s winemaking.
